I’m sure we’ve all seen logos that are synonymous with different companies like the golden arches of the McDonald’s logo. The function behind a logo goes far beyond just being pretty for your website or printed media. As with the example the main component of your branding efforts lie in your logo. Your logo should represent your business and what it stands for. That being said there are a few factors that make for an effective logo design.
What is a logo?
Maybe you’re wondering what makes a logo, a logo. A logo is part of a company’s branding and represents the company though the use of shapes, colors, fonts and images that are strikingly different from other logos in the same market niche. Logos must aim to be immediately recognizable, inspire trust, admiration, loyalty, and imply superiority.
What makes a logo good?
A good logo is distinctive, appropriate, practical, graphic and simple in form. It also conveys the owners intended messages or concept. A logo should be able to be printed at any size and be effective with or without color. A great logo comes down to two things great concept and great execution.
These are the basics for a logo.
A good logo is distinctive or memorable.
This is probably the biggest characteristic of logo design. A logo must stand out and catch an audience’s attention. In most cases great logos are easy to remember and some only have a symbol instead of a company name. This is because we usually remember pictures better than words. Let’s look at Apples logo for instance. Their logo is that have a half bitten apple rather than their name. This image is what we associate with Apples branding. On that point logos should also try to survive time. That way they can still convey a message years later on from when the original design was created. This usually means keeping the design simple and recognizable by colors and fonts for the niche business will help logos last decades.
A good logo has purpose.
A good logo design reflects the message or concept for the business. Logos should carry this meaning to customers. This way people know what the company does.
A logo should be unique.
A logo should stand out and be unique in the market it is in. This is becoming increasingly difficult since there are so many logos in today’s market. There are a few tips though to combat this problem. This includes designing a logo that makes a statement through the use of color scheme. An example of this is the FedEx logo. The ‘Ex’ has a specific color for the company’s different services. FedEx ground the “Ex” is green and FedEx express is “Ex” is orange. Another hidden feature of this logo is an arrow between E and X. These type of feature help to make a logo stand out for a company.
A Logo should be simple.
Simplicity makes a logo design easily recognizable and memorable. Good logos feature something unique but not overdone. Part of keeping the logo simple is so to ensure that viewers can recognize the logo and the companies branding. Much like the Nike Check logo.
A logo should be versatile.
Another consideration is the versatility of a logo. Many times logos are printed on surfaces that are colorless and in different sizes. So an effective logo works across a variety of media and applications.
Final thoughts
These are some of the most crucial tips to consider for logos and their designs. A logo must be simply and unique that can easily convey a brand message. It should also be memorable so that people can easily recognize and associate the logo the company.
